Congratulations to DMU Gospel Choir!
The 6th annual University Gospel Choir of the Year competition held on the 5th March 2016 at the Hippodrome, Golders Green was a spectacular show! The run up to the show saw the highest number of new university choirs enter – a sign that the show was bound to be the most spoken about UGCY yet. The sold out competition hosted nearly 300 performers and has received glowing reviews.
DeMonfort University (DMU) Gospel Choir won the coveted University Gospel Choir of the Year at this year’s event! They came ready in their Nigerian inspired outfits, with the ladies adorning elaborate head-scarves. They serenaded the audience and impressed the judges with a traditional gospel sound with an addition of Southern African praise songs and traditional dancing that had the audience up on their feet.
Runners up were University of Leicester, Leicester University Voices (UGCY 2015 Champions) and Canterbury Christchurch University, Canterbury Christ Church Gospel Choir.
UGCY would like to congratulate the champions and all finalists, we look forward to DeMonfort University (DMU) Gospel Choir coming back in 2017 to defend their title. Our 2016 finalists included: University of Southampton ACCF Choir Southampton, Coventry University Coventry University Gospel Rhythms, DeMonfort University DMU Student Choir, Middlesex University MDX Gospel Choir and University of Portsmouth Portsmouth Gospel Choir. Special thanks to our sponsors, resident host, MOBO-Award winning singing powerhouse Rachel Kerr and UK Gospel royalty Isaiah Raymond.
